Christine Das

Born 1966 in Penang, Malaysia

chrisdas8 (small color)A Penang born artist who schooled at Convent Green Lane Penang and obtained her formal arts education in graphic design at the Sain Academy of Arts Penang. Her artistic journey traversed book illustrations, displays, mural painting, graphic design and animation. She was even a scenic artist on the set of the Hollywood production “Anna and the King”, filmed in Malaysia in 1999, working alongside Peter Collias. In 2007, she turned to painting full-time.

Christine works mostly with acrylic on canvas. Her paintings have been influenced and inspired by her passions: Nature, Catholicism and Life. Her stylized yet elegant renditions are meticulous and fostered through patient stroke-by-stroke immersion to capture the essence of movement, sound and events of the environment. The images appear complex yet it exudes simplicity. Every unbroken line represents natures ever flowing life. Since her debut, she has participated in numerous local and international group art shows. Her artwork was also part of an installation project by Wei Ling Art Gallery at the 2013 Art Basel Exhibition, the “Olympics of Art”, in Hong Kong. Two of her figurative works are featured in the International Contemporary Artists 2013 Publication. For her work as an artist, Christine received the Woman of Style and Substance award from Marie Claire magazine (Malaysia) in 2013.

Her personal passion and also life mission is the Conservation of Borneo Elephants & their habitat and Christine works with Borneo Conservation Trust Sabah and WWF Malaysia in support of this cause. She uses art as a voice to create awareness and raise funds.

The artist also draws inspiration from Spanish modernist architect, Antoni Gaudi, whose masterpieces include the famous La Sagrada Familia and many other unique architectural wonders in the city of Barcelona. Exposure to his out-of-the-box designs gave her the courage to explore art that is imbued with her own identity. Malaysian Masters whom she admires: The father of Malaysian batik, Late Dato Chuah Thean Theng, Mr Syed Thajudeen and Late Ibrahim Hussein who have all expressed their own distinct signature style in their art that’s so recognizable.

The beauty and mystery of nature has captured my attention, and moved me deeply since a very young age. She brings me great joy and simultaneously moves me to tears. I spent so much of time gazing at nature and pondered upon the purpose of her existence and thus developed a strong spiritual connection with nature. She is my muse…the object of my contemplation and I have learnt that we need nature in order to have a full harmonious existence and that she is wisdom, she is life giving, is awe-inspiring and she is my Cathedral where I meet and experience God.

I feel compelled to express Mother Nature’s beauty to the world through my art as there is a major conflict with us humans and weakens her at an alarming rate. I hope to stir hearts towards a deeper love, respect and appreciation for nature. Many do not realize that we have a symbiotic relationship with Her and Nature must be protected for our sake. Every life form in Nature is priceless and serves a purpose esp. in our very existence. I am a voice for nature. There are times I see myself as the alter ego of Mother Nature, Gaia.
