Vice Versa: A Jogja Art Weeks Event

Yogyakarta, already well-known for the vibrancy of its art scene, goes into art-overdrive every year when Art|Jog takes place. Art connoisseurs and practitioners from the world over congregate on this small city in Central Java, not just for Art|Jog but also for the numerous fringe and parallel events and exhibitions that take place in the weeks surrounding this premier art event. The number of these fringe and parallel events has grown tremendously over the years, and are now collectively known as Jogja Art Weeks.

It is therefore an great honor and privilege for Artemis Art to hold our debut exhibition in Indonesia during this period. Vice Versa is a group exhibition featuring twenty artworks from 13 young Indonesian and Malaysian artists. Participating in this exhibition are Aditya Chandra H., Andrialis Abdul Rahman, ERYN, Haris Rashid, Justian Jafin Rocx W., M. A. Roziq, M. Fadhlil Abdi, Nik Mohd Shahfiz, Phaksi Kharisma Dewa, Rosit Mulyadi, Ruzzeki Harris, Syahbandi Samat, and Yasmen Cheong.

The exhibition takes place at our ad hoc gallery space in Yogyakarta, located at Galeri Rumah Jati, Karangjati RW 05 RT 11, Tamantirto Kasihan, Bantul, Yogyakarta (link opens in Google Maps), just across the small lane from Nalarroepa Ruang Seni, where Dedy Sufriadi will be having his 12th solo exhibition entitled Re-Texs Ture. Vice Versa opens on Monday, May 23 2016 with an opening reception at 7:30pm (Western Indonesia Time/Waktu Indonesia Barat), and continues for one month until 23 June 2016.

Artemis Art is delighted to present Vice Versa during this very important annual period for Yogyakarta, as an influential regional center for visual art.

Comprising some 20 artworks by thirteen young artists from Indonesia and Malaysia, Vice Versa is a survey, providing a glimpse of the rich diversity found in the art practices of young artists from our two neighboring countries.

Indonesia and Malaysia have many commonalities, particularly evident in the areas of culture and language. Not at all surprising, taking into account the fluidity of movement throughout the Nusantara in the many centuries prior to colonization by Western imperial powers.

Although there are commonalities, the respective trajectories each nation has taken post-independence have been quite distinct, forming what are today two very unique nations.

Similarly, how visual art practice has progressed through the years is quite different when looking at Indonesia and Malaysia, each having experienced evolutionary developments unique from one another.

Although it’s often said that art is a universal language, a slightly more granular view is that this universal language is often spoken in many different dialects, depending on the locale from where the artworks and artists originate.

It is this inter-dialect conversation that forms the basis on which Vice Versa approaches the coming together of these thirteen young artists. The underlying concerns may sometimes be the same, but how it is conveyed slightly differs depending on the visual dialect “spoken”.

Artemis Art’s ardent hope is that this exhibition will be the first of many such visual dialectic exchanges between young artists from our two nations. It will be entirely up to the young artists themselves how they benefit from such visual exchanges, but what’s important is that they be given a platform.

And so, without further ado, let the “conversations” begin…

Vice Versa features the works by 13 young artists from Indonesia and Malaysia, each of whom have provided one or two artworks to be exhibited. A total of 20 artworks are currently on exhibit, and all works are available for sale. For enquiries, email us at in**@ar***************.com.
