Hitam Misericordia, from which the title of this work is derived, is Latin for ‘mercy’. And in the 20th century, if there were one figure who immediately evoked the idea of mercy, it would certainly have been Mother Teresa, now recognized by the Catholic church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
