Dystopians +: a dual-location solo by Ajim Juxta

Dystopians + is in part a re-staging of Ajim Juxta’s 6th solo exhibition, Dystopians, held in June last year at Vinyl On Vinyl in Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines. The complete selection of works is an expanded one, and includes paintings and drawings that were originally shown in the various international art fairs that Artemis Art participated in over the last two years.

Another aspect of this exhibition that makes it unique is that it will be distributed across two different locations in Kuala Lumpur: at Artemis Art’s gallery space in Publika, and at Greydea Studio in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail.

The exhibition will open with a reception in our gallery at 4pm on Saturday, 26 September 2020. It is our pleasure to announce that the guest of honor for the opening shall be YB Tony Pua, Member of Parliament for Damansara. While Tony is better known as a politician, he is also a visual artist and someone who’s very supportive of the Malaysian art scene. Part of the afternoon opening will be an informal sketch session where Ajim and a few of his artist friends will be sketching in our gallery. All guests to the opening reception are more than welcome to join in the sketch session if they so wish to.

Following the opening, an Open Studio will be held at Greydea Studio from 2pm to 6pm on Sunday, 27 September 2020, allowing art enthusiasts and the public at large to meet and greet with Ajim, for more intimate conversation about his art and artistic career.

Dystopians + continues after the two opening events until Sunday, 18 October 2020.

Artist Profile & Exhibited Works

In 2019, Ajim Juxta achieved a new milestone in his artistic career when his sixth solo exhibition Dystopians was hosted by Vinyl On Vinyl in Manila, Philippines, making it the artist’s first international solo exhibition.

Dystopians+ is more than merely a restaging of those works, but expands the collection to include relevant works that have mostly only been shown overseas but not in Malaysia. The complete collection of works are distributed across two locations, at our gallery space in Publika, and at Greydea Studio in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, which currently also serves as the home base for the Titikmerah collective, which Ajim is part of.

Included in the exhibition are both his paintings on canvas and his pen and ink drawings on paper. Most of these – apart from the ones from his solo in Manila – have thus far only been shown in the various international art fairs that Artemis Art has participated in over the last couple of years.
