Oky Rey Montha was born in Yogyakarta, but grew up in the mountainous area of Karo Regency, North Sumatra. His father being himself an artist, Montha’s exposure to the world of the arts began at a very early age and remembers a childhood environment where just about every facet of life revolved around art and creativity. The difficult life of an artist also meant that Montha had to mature beyond his years. Assisting his father resulted in very little childhood playtime, turning instead to comics as a substitute, giving him a very early exposure to surrealism.

Montha studied Visual Communication Design at Institut Seni Indonesia (or ISI for short, Indonesian Institute of Art) in Yogyakarta and during his time there founded the TempatKencink (TK) community (engaged in art event organisation activities), and Diskom Drawing Foundation (DDF) (a drawing community). While at ISI he learned about art management, image branding, and illustration, among other things. All these plus the design knowledge he learned would become useful when he later chose fine art as his vocation.

There are no strict limits to Montha’s repertoire of creative output; drawing, installations, painting, photo- and videography, sculpting, digital imaging, and music; are all among the many media types he has used to create, his choice at any one juncture based on what is best to realise his ideas.

The artist had his first solo exhibition in 2010, and since then Montha has had one solo almost annually, both in Indonesia and on the international stage. In addition, he regularly participates in group exhibitions, art fairs, and charity events.
Montha’s imaginatively evocative visual style combines pop art with surrealism, supplemented by gothic motifs, backdrops and sensibilities. This becomes the conduit through which the artist tells his stories, multifaceted dreamlike excursions into his experiences, interactions, and observations about the world around him.

Numerous influences have contributed towards his artistic style over the years. These include music, pop culture, and even spirituality, melding seamlessly towards the unique visuality of his artworks, additionally informed by his deep interest in humanism and psychology. His continued involvement with the Yogyakarta artist community allows him to keep abreast of what’s current, which in turn helps to keep his art ‘alive’ and relevant with the fast-changing times.
