ART@23 Penang Art Event

ART@23: a George Town art getaway weekend

ART@23 marks Artemis Art’s first event in George Town, Penang, taking place from Friday to Sunday, 11 – 13 March, 2022. We’ve selected the quaint 23LoveLane boutique art hotel as the venue for the event, comprising artist takeover of rooms, plus a small artisan showcase. ART@23 will cover the lobby area, the Anglo Indian Bungalow, and the first floor of the Straits Eclectic Building.

Nestled between Lebuh Chulia and Lebuh Farquhar, in the heart of George Town, 23LoveLane is a laid-back and welcoming location, a complex of buildings converted into a boutique hotel with 10 unique rooms within, and whose overall arty ambiance makes for a perfect location for the event.

The idea behind this event is to encourage a rejuvenation of spirit within the visual art community of Penang, badly affected by the pandemic that has all but obliterated the art scene over the past two years. Now that society at large is beginning to cautiously open up again, we thought it would be a good time to create something fun for Penang, that all art enthusiasts may enjoy and at the same time provide an added avenue for the artists to show their works.

Artists participating in this event comprise mostly Penang-based artists, plus those from Titikmerah, a KL-based collective whose members have been active participants in art activities around George Town over the past few years. The eclectic styles and mediums presented is a reflection of the diversity in artistic practices to be found in the Penang art ecosphere.

Included in ART@23 will be works by artists such Aboud Fares, Adeputra Masri, Ajim Juxta, Art Keong, Bibichun, Blankmalaysia, Hasanul Isyraf Idris, Latif Maulan, Low Chee Peng, Sami Succari, Tetriana Fauzi, and Yap Ley Min.

Admission to the event is free, with strict observance of prevailing pandemic SOPs.

Curatorial Walkthrough

One of the things that makes 23LoveLane unique is the eclectic collection of contemporary artworks housed within the boutique art hotel. The artworks comprise those by Indonesian and Malaysian artists that the hotel’s owner has collected over the years, contributing to the homey laid-back atmosphere that has made the hotel a destination of choice.

It is heartening to note that the hotel’s owner has graciously consented for us to do a curatorial walkthrough of a selection of the collection. Guided by young Penang-based curator Ivan Gabriel, two sessions have been planned, from 10:30 to 11:30 am on Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13.

Due to space considerations, SOP compliance, and to facilitate an optimum walkthrough experience, we have limited each session to 8 persons. As such, pre-registration is required (although the tour itself is free of charge). Registration may be done online via this link.

About Your Facilitator

Ivan Gabriel is a multi-disciplinary artist who prides himself in being a teller of tales. He loves exploring different techniques and mediums not only as a way to stretch his artistic skills, but to also internalize these various techniques to build a more expansive visual vocabulary in his works. Ivan has, as a curator, successfully produced several exhibitions, a recent one being the successful “LangUR Exhibition: Building Bridge Between Our Worlds”, held at the Penang State Art Museum last year.
